Background

WGAL Channel 8 is a Hearst-Argyle owned television station, located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They are the NBC affiliate for the Harrisburg-Lancaster-York-Lebanon area, which is the 44th largest television market in the country. They began serving the Susquehanna Valley in 1949, one of the oldest stations in the state of Pennsylvania. They have a sophisticated network of weather forecasting equipment, distributed live cameras, and live news remotes crews.

Scope of Project

The main studios and production facility for the station needed an updated cooling system to support the increasing heat loads created by the television production equipment, the studio lights, computer loads, and related transmission equipment, as well as their office space. G.R. Sponaugle Service, in partnership with Trane, designed and installed the complex replacement for their cooling tower and reservoir tank.

The previous wooden tower and reservoir tank was uniquely located within the building shell constructed over 50 years ago. This created some delicate and well coordinated work to remove this equipment, and install a new steel tower with a stainless steel basin within the existing shell. The new cooling tower was installed on-site in the existing space and required custom-made piping and ducting that was made in the Fabrication Shop of G.R. Sponaugle.

The new chillers and condensers are powered and controlled for optimal energy efficiency while providing WGAL with the peak performance needed for the critical uptime of their operation.
